Video of tiger at Florida high school prom sparks outrage

MADISON (WKOW) -- Some parents are outraged after a tiger was the surprise at a Florida Catholic high school's prom dance.

Cell phone video shows students from Christopher Columbus High School in Miami watching as a caged tiger rolled into their prom dance on Friday night.

A mother who watched the video tells ABC affiliate WPLG that she's worried that it's teaching the children that there is "no merit to the life of that animal".

The school released a statement saying that the tiger was "on display for a few minutes, was never harmed or in danger, and was not forced to perform". They also say that the tiger was always with its handlers and was laying down in a relaxed state for the majority of the time.

The video posted on social media shows the tiger pacing in the cage.

Christopher Columbus High School Principal David Pugh said Monday in a statement that "upon reflection, we regret the decision to have live animals at our prom." He goes on to say, "This decision in no way reflects the Marist values, teachings of the Catholic Church and/or the accomplishments of our young and that of our distinguished alumni. We remain proud of the work we do in our community by raising awareness for pediatric cancer, autism and our homeless veterans, to name a few."
