UPDATE: Want your $100 child tax rebate? Follow these steps

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- You can now apply online or over the phone with the Department of Revenue to get your $100 per child tax credit. Officials said after applying, it should take less than three weeks to see the credit in the mail.

Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch said with a lot of interest and already thousand of people applying, there is staff available to answer any additional questions.

“The assumption is that your going to spend at least $100 in sales tax a year on your kid, said Kleefisch. “The reason we can do these rebates is because we had a very large surplus in the budget."

Democrats have been critical of the child tax credit. They believe it's a reelection gimmick by Governor Walker because the checks will be in the mail before the August primary.

Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) said the budget surplus could have been used for other things, like fixing roads and reducing the backlog of untested rape kits.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The application window is now open for Wisconsin taxpayers with children under age 18 to apply for a $100 tax rebate.

Only those who successfully apply online starting Tuesday with the state Department of Revenue will receive the money, which Gov. Scott Walker and the Republican-controlled Legislature approved earlier this year.

Applications will be accepted through July 2, with all the money sent to qualified taxpayers by September.

To qualify, children must have been under age 18 as of Dec. 31, 2017, and be a Wisconsin resident.

The rebate can be direct deposited or sent as a check.

The application website is childtaxrebate.wi.gov.

Democrats have assailed the $122 million rebate, and a five-day sales tax holiday in August, as nothing more than election-year bribes.
