MADISON (WKOW) -- Recent heavy rains have led to significant amounts of floating debris in Dane County lakes.

With boaters just getting on the water for the first time this season, Dane County deputies want them to be aware of the potential to encounter these hazards on local waters.

Boaters should keep their speeds down, and they should be on the lookout for floating branches and other items taken from shore as water levels have risen.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office also urges boaters to wear their life jackets and thoroughly inspect their boats before taking them out on the water for this season.
