Madison Water Utility asks for higher rate increase

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- If you live in Madison, your water bill might soon cost more.

Last fall, the city water utility asked the Public Service Commission for a 26 percent rate hike. Now, it's revising the proposal, asking for a 32 percent rate hike instead.

If approved, the new rate could go into effect as early as October. Officials estimate your monthly bill would go up by about $5-10, depending on how much water you use.

Madison Water Utility says funds from the rate hike would help replace old water mains, reconstruct aging wells and improve water quality. The additional revenue would also help cover lost revenue from the Oscar Mayer plant closing.

Water costs make up about a third of the average Madisonian's Municipal Service Bill, which also includes sewer, stormwater, urban forestry and landfill charges. The rate hike would only apply to the water portion of the bill.
