UPDATE: At least 8 people dead in Texas school shooting, shooter arrested

UPDATE (WKOW) -- At least eight people were killed in a school shooting, according to authorities in Santa Fe, Texas. 

The school district confirms an unspecified number of people have been injured in the shooting.

No other details about the casualties have been released.

UPDATE (WKOW) --  The assistant principal says the shooter at Santa Fe High School "has been arrested and secured."

KTRK, the ABC affiliate in Houston, reports the shooter appears to be a student.  

The school district confirms an unspecified number of people have been hurt and issued the following statement:

"This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The situation is active, but has been contained. There have been confirmed injuries. Details will be released as we receive updated information. Law enforcement will continue to secure the building and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location. All other campuses are operating under their regular schedules.
At this time, students from the high school are being transported by SFISD transportation to the Alamo Gym located at 13306 Highway 6. Parents may reunite with their students at this location.
The district will continue to keep you updated as information is available. Safety and communication are our top priorities."

SANTE FE, Texas (WKOW) -- A spokesperson for the Sante Fe school district, south of Houston, confirms to media that there was an active shooter at the high school Friday morning.  

The statement reads as follows: 

"This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The district has initiated a lockdown. We will send out additional information as soon as it is available."

Witnesses have told reporters at our ABC affiliate in Houston, KTRK,  the shooting started in art class around 7:45 a.m.  

KTRK reports a medical helicopter was called and ATF agents are on scene.  A parent tells reporters he saw students on stretchers.  Police have not confirmed if anyone was hurt.
