Neighbors describe crash near Monroe airport

Posted: Updated:

GREEN COUNTY (WKOW) -- It was the noise, Roger Geigel said, that alerted him something was wrong at his Monroe farm on Sunday.

"I heard about noon it sounded like heavy trucks or something crashing and all of a sudden it stopped and there was police and fire all over the place," he said.

A plane crashed at the edge of his property, across the street from the Monroe airport.

Geigel said he followed the smoke and by the time he made it out to the crash site police were already on scene.

He said the plane looked small, like a crumpled heap of metal, tan and white in color.

"I don't think they made it out of there by the looks of it," he said.

According to the Green County Sheriff's Office four members of Kenosha family were in the plane. There were no survivors. Full details here.

Valerie Pick lives across the field from the crash and said it shook her home.

"I thought it was the gravel pit next door doing some dynamiting then but I thought, 'No, it's Sunday they wouldn't be doing that," she said.

When she learned the source was fatal crash, killing a grandmother, her daughter and two grandchildren, she said she was shaken again.

"It's just tragic," she said. "No words, you know."

Both neighbors said the crash reminded them of another near the Monroe airport in 1988. That crash killed two people.
