Mailboat jumpers audition to deliver mail on Lake Geneva

Posted: Updated:

LAKE GENEVA (WKOW) -- For more than a century, mail on Lake Geneva has been delivered by boat -- and that boat doesn't stop.

The town held its annual mailboat jumper tryouts Tuesday. Hopefuls jump off the boat with letters in hand, make the delivery and hop back on the boat before it sails away.

Some jumpers took a tumble, hitting the ground hard when they jumped onto the dock. Others slipped off the boat into the water, making quite a splash.

For many teens, the unique summer job is a rite of passage.

"My grandma's cousin was one of the first females to jump," said mailboat jumper Katie Theisz. "Maybe I'm carrying on a little family tradition here."

The captain has to keep the boat moving to stop it from crashing into docks on the lake.

For those who make the cut, mail boat delivery starts Friday and lasts through mid-September.
