Madison College is getting a solar panel upgrade

Posted: Updated:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison College has begun to install solar panels to the roof of the Truax Campus.

The $2.3 million system is expected to save the college more than $200,000 a year in electricity costs. However, that is not the only thing that the solar system is going to be used for.

"We are obviously installing the system to save energy for college, but at the same time, this system will be used for instructional purposes," says Madison College Instructor Dr. Ken Walz.

Walz is overseeing the new project and says that it will be a great addition to the college as a whole.

"The project will allow us to use the system for open hours events and public tours so that way we can really make it a community asset."

Over the course of an entire year, the system will help offset about 20% of the college's total electric consumption.

Walz says that the project is expected to open in September.
