Reported Kohl's thief stopped after running away from police

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police and a department store loss prevention officer were able to catch a woman who reportedly fled the store with about a thousand dollars' worth of merchandise.

A news release Friday afternoon says police were called to the Kohl's at  2602 East Springs Drive Thursday about 6:30 p.m on a report of a theft in progress. Department store security personnel told police they saw Amanda Elizabeth Meinen, 32, of Madison leaving the store merchandise after coming out of the fitting room.

Officer Howard Payne says the suspect had also "conducted some interesting sales returns" with Kohl's sales associates.

When they tried to stop the suspect as she was leaving the store, police say she immediately started to frantically run through the parking lot. As an officer continued to give chase using an audible police siren, Meinen allegedly ran away and later tried to get into the back door of a nearby store.

When she wasn't able to open the locked door, officers ordered her to the ground and took her into custody.

Officer Payne says Meinen could face charges of felony retail theft and resisting a police officer.
