MADISON (WKOW) --  Scorching temperatures are expected in Dane County and throughout southern Wisconsin, prompting health officials to issue a health warning. If you have to be out in the heat, you’ll want to take extra precautions.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are a real concern with the extreme temperatures. So officials are urging people to be careful if you have to be outside or anywhere without air conditioning. If you don’t have a/c, public buildings, malls, libraries, or senior centers are good places to go to escape the heat and humidity.

“We really want to encourage people to check on their neighbors, their family, in particular, the elderly. Go knock on their door. Make sure they're doing alright. Make a phone call. Make sure people are staying cool. If they don't have their air on, encouraging that,” said Carrie Meier, EMS specialist with Dane County Emergency Management.

“We're planning to go to the pool a lot. we're members of the Shorewood Hills pool. So we'll probably be there all day Saturday and Sunday,” said Caitlin Carroll, with her daughter at Elver Park splash park.

Officials say heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in Wisconsin. Those most at risk are children, older adults and those with chronic physical or mental health conditions.

You’ll want to wear loose, light-colored clothes and remember to stay hydrated.
