Elder care at center of Sun Prairie celebration during heat wave

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Despite the warm weather, an annual tradition in Sun Prairie continued Saturday; the Colonial Club's 31st Annual Strawberry Fest, which helped raise money for their Senior Activity Center.

Plenty of lemonade and shaved ice were on hand and with the heat index reaching 100 degrees those treats were very necessary, especially for the older folks that the Colonial Club serves.

"We have a home-delivered meal program for shut-ins, we have an on-site adult day care," Bob Power, Executive  Director for the Colonial Club, said. "We have case management for seniors and we have a home chore programs for older adults."

Power says The Colonial Club goes far above and beyond those services, especially when the temperatures are oppressive like they were Saturday.

"We certainly caution folks about heat. During heat emergencies, we are a cooling center for the Sun Prairie community," Power said.

They also help older adults find a way to get air conditioning in their homes, through a partnership with Dane county. He says this program is important since adults over 65 are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

The Strawberry Fest was all about raising money for the organization that supporters say does so much for the older population in their community. However, the group's executive director says every community has older people in need.

"We age, everybody ages, everybody gets old. There are a lot of people that need help," Power said. "They need help with their home chores, or help with meals, so visit your local senior center in your community."

Nearly 2,500 people attended the festival on Saturday. While much of the event was outdoors, folks were able to step inside to cool down.
