Bikers battle heat in Madison's Loop the Lake ride

MADISON (WKOW) -- The felt-like-100-degree-temperatures Saturday didn't stop hundreds of bikers from coming out to support Madison's lakes.

Promoters say the 6th annual Loop the Lake Bike Ride, hosted by the Clean Lakes Alliance, highlighted area lakes and lakeshore bike paths. The 12-mile trek was a fundraiser and organizers say this year's event was the biggest one yet with more than 800 riders.

"I think the important thing is that all of this brings the lakes to the center of the community," said Adam Sodersten with Clean Lakes Alliance. "So, all of the money that our bike ride is raising today is going to help fund lake improvement projects, educational programs and then our lake monitoring programs."

Several kids also participated in the second annual sand building competition that took place before the bike event at Olbrich Park.

Sodersten says the competition was made possible in part by the Madison Community Foundation. Prizes will be awarded next week for the event.
