Rock County Sheriff: Beware of latest "warrant" phone scam

Posted: Updated:

ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) -- The Rock County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam that tells people they have outstanding warrants and demands payment.

Over the past few days, people in Rock County have been contacted by phone by a subject claiming to be Sgt. Egger from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release.

The caller claimed that the person called has warrants for their arrest. They are told to purchase prepaid money cards and asked to give the card numbers and expiration dates over the phone.

The sheriff’s office reminds residents that it does not call people to notify them of a warrant. We also do not take payment for warrants over the phone.

If you have received a phone call from someone claiming to be an officer stating you have a warrant and owe money because of it, this is a scam and you should not engage this person, according to the sheriff's office.

You should contact the non-emergency dispatch number of 757-2244 and report this incident as soon as possible.
