MADISON (WKOW) -- A recognizeable vehicle around Madison getting a bit of an environmental makeover. The local owner of the 1-800-GOT-JUNK truck pulled into the Prairie Fire Biofuels Co-op Monday morning.
Workers will retool the vehicle to run on used vegetable oil, as well as its standard diesel. The co-op began selling used vegetable oil straight from the pump earlier this year
"Having a separate fuel system allows us to run on either diesel fuel or vegetable oil, and in this case, it's going to allow us to save about 50-cents on our fuel costs," said franchise owner John Patterson.
Patterson said he spent $10,000 on diesel last year. He's hoping to save about $1,700 this year with used vegetable oil.
A corporate spokesperson tells us this will be the first of its trucks in North America to be on the alternative fuel.
The conversion will be completed Wednesday.
