Madison Marines to return after tour in Iraq

MADISON (WKOW) -- US Marine Corps Reserve:

Marines of Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, based out of Madison, WI, will return this Saturday the 23rd after their seven-month tour in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment was activated on September 10, 2007.  After four months of pre-deployment training at Camp Pendleton and Twenty Nine Palms, California, the battalion was deployed to the Al Anbar province of Iraq in January 2008 for seven months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  The company recently returned from Iraq to California in mid-August 2008.

This activation and deployment was the battalion's second deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  The battalion's first activation and deployment was from June 2004 to May 2005.

The mission for the battalion while in Iraq was in partnership with the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) to conduct combined security, stability, and support operations to neutralize insurgency in zone in order to enable a self-reliant and legitimate local security and government apparatus that facilitates transition and Provincial Iraqi Control.

Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment will be welcomed home by families and friends at Wisconsin Aviation - South Ramp, located in Madison, WI on Saturday, August 23rd, 2008.
