Department of Justice files action against door-to-door seller of meat and seafood

Madison (WKOW) -- From WI Dept. of Justice:  The Wisconsin Department of Justice has filed a consumer protection lawsuit in Brown County Circuit Court against a Wisconsin corporation, Great Lakes Wholesale Foods, Inc., d/b/a Great Lakes Distributors, of Hudson, Wisconsin.

Great Lakes sells meat and seafood products door-to-door to residential customers in Wisconsin, and state law gives consumers a right to cancel their transaction within three days.

The lawsuit alleges that Great Lakes has violated Wisconsin consumer laws by failing to disclose to purchasers their right to cancel the transactions, and by failing to honor cancellation requests.

The suit also alleges that Great Lakes violated state law-and a prior agreement with the state-by failing to maintain records of its transactions.

The case was referred to the Department of Justice by the Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection, which has received complaints about Great Lakes.

The case has been assigned to Brown County Circuit Court Judge Timothy A. Hinkfuss, and is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General John Greene.
