Two studies out this month say two very different things about the job market in Janesville.
One report, by the Milken Institute, says Janesville is seeing a lot of job growth, however, the Department of Workforce Development says since August, unemployment has risen to almost eight percent. Area experts say there is truth to both reports. They say there are a lot of new jobs in the area, unfortunately many people don't have the skills to get them.
Dr. Eric Larson, Blackhawk Technical College President, explains, "certainly there is growth in our area. The health industry is growing. Dean/St. Mary's announced a new hospital to be built in the area. Beloit Memorial Hospital is expanding their emergency room operations. The Monroe Clinic is expanding."
Blackhawk Technical School says other emerging industries in the area include logistics, transportation and plastics.
The school is working with the Rock County Job Center to train workers for those jobs. The job center is paying for 300 people to take classes there.
Experts say janesville is in the process of transitioning away from the automotive industry and predict things will probably be tough for awhile in Rock County.
