Madison (WKOW) -- from Dane Co. Sheriff: Drive SMART citations in September more than doubled in comparison to last year's numbers.
Dane County Sheriff's Deputies and Police Officers from Cottage Grove, Middleton, City of Madison, and Monona, handed out a total of 362 citations in September of this year, compared to 175 in 2007.
Seven people were arrested for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI), 227 speeding citations were issued, and 47 drivers were cited for Operating After Revocation/Operating After Suspension.
One of the easiest ways to stay safe on the highway is by wearing a seatbelt, yet 34 people were ticketed for not doing so.
During a traffic stop by a Dane County Deputy on September 25th, a passenger was arrested when he was found to have a felony warrant for Party to a Crime of Armed Battery.
The 18-year-old Madison man was also cited for possessing THC.
This concludes the Drive SMART program for 2008.
The additional enforcement is funded by a grant through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
During the four-month project, 1,281 citations and warnings were given out on Highway 12/18 between the town of Cottage Grove and Middleton.
Due to the significant traffic safety issues on this stretch of highway, the Dane County Sheriff's Office will continue to dedicate a portion of the six-person traffic team to conducting enforcement on the beltline.
In addition, in 2009 the traffic team will work approximately 1,000 hours on Friday and Saturday nights with a focus on arresting impaired drivers throughout Dane County.
