Strip club given to recovering alcoholics

Janesville (WKOW) -- A building that once housed a strip club in Janesville is being retooled to help recovering alcoholics.

The city shut down Screamin' Meemee's over a year ago after police discovered a prostitution ring operating there.

Now the owner of the building is donating it to the group 12 & 12 as part of a plea bargain. 12 & 12 provides meeting space for alcoholic recovery groups, like AA. It can't do that without a decent building and in the past, it's always had to rent. The group is supported largely by donations from it members, who are mostly recovering alcoholics themselves. It says now that rent money can be better spent.

"It means we'll pay able to provide more services for people that need it. Help other people in other ways," explains Kevin Volksman, a 12 & 12 member.

12 & 12 is getting a community development grant for over $40 thousand.

It applied for that grant last year and planned on using it to buy a building.

It will now go towards renovating its new building.

12 & 12 hopes to move into its new building in December. It says its membership usually goes up during the winter.
