Update: Fire official says suspended lieutenant fit for duty
Madison (WKOW) -- A Madison fire department official says a suspended lieutenant who caused an Amber Alert has been declared fit for duty by a doctor.
Earlier this week, Lieutenant Craig Underkofler told 27 News he was being reinstated after more than a year off the job.
Underkofler was found not guilty by reason of mental disease in the taking of his children to Minnesota in violation of court orders. Underkofler's actions in June 2007 caused authorities to issue an Amber Alert. As a result of the alert, Underkofler's four children were found unharmed. Underkofler had a weapon and ammunition, and an attorney for one of his former wives said he was heading to Canada.
Fire department spokesperson Lori Wirth says an independent physician examined Underkofler and said he's capable of returning to work.
