LIVONIA, Mich. (AP) -- United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger says he is very concerned that workers could lose their jobs if General Motors Corp.'s talks to acquire Chrysler LLC come to fruition.
Gettelfinger said in an interview before a political rally on Friday that he knows the companies have been holding discussions for a long time and says there probably are steps the union could take to try to halt any merger.
But he says that would be speculation at this point.
Gettelfinger says the union also is concerned about further job cuts at GM as it tries to deal with slumping sales and the credit crisis.
The automaker has announced thousands of layoffs at its factories in the past week.
