Sheriff standoff in Exeter with man holding kitchen utensil


Exeter (WKOW) -- from Green County Sheriff's Department:  Early Wednesday afternoon, the Green County Sheriff's Department received a 911 cell phone call.

  A male caller stated he was outside of a home in Exeter Township and reported another male had threatened him.

  Sheriff's deputies immediately responded along with officers from New Glarus and Belleville Police Departments.

  Preliminary information indicates the caller had been visiting the home and had a disagreement with another adult male, who was also reportedly visiting.

  The caller indicated he was in the home when the other male made threats directed at him with a sharp object in his hand.

  The reporting male left the home and called 911.

  The sharp object has not been positively identified and the Sheriff's Office does not believe a firearm was involved.

  Officers have secured the area and the suspect was contained in the home.

  The Monroe Police Department Emergency Response Team also responded to the scene.

  Later that night,  48-year-old Gerald M. Erpelding of Bellville was arrested at the home, which is located in Green County approximately five miles south of Belleville in the 7000 block of County Trunk CC.

  Erpelding was taken into custody a short time after the Tactical Team and the Green County Canine and Handler entered the residence located him on the first floor where he was attempting to conceal himself.

  Erpelding has been initially charged with Battery and Disorderly Conduct while armed.

  Erpelding had been armed with a kitchen utensil and scissors.
