Getting a kick out of Halloween for protection

MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- A tae kwon do instructor hopes to help kids get a kick out of Halloween while staying safe.

The American Martial Arts Center in Middleton held a safety seminar Saturday morning to teach kids how to safely trick or treat.

The kids did get a chance to break some boards, but the focus was on how to avoid dangerous situations in the first place.

Instructor Kevin McDaniel stressed things like avoiding dark houses and not walking alone.  "Society is not as safe as it used to be," said McDaniel.  "I remember when I was a kid, you could go out and spend all night trick or treating and not have to worry about anything.  These days, you just have to be a little more cautious and with good information the kids can make good safe decisions."

The facility has given safety presentations in the past, but this was the first one to focus on Halloween.  It was part of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters pumpkin drive at the Keva Sports Center
