MAZOMANIE, Wis. (AP) -- Dane County is buying more than 1,000 acres of land along the Wisconsin River in the town of Mazomanie to be restored for recreational use.
County Executive Kathleen Falk said Wednesday the land between Walking Iron County Park and the Mazomanie State Wildlife Area has wetlands, prairie and woodlands.
The county's budget includes $4.3 million for the purchase. Plans call for working with the state Department of Natural Resources and the Natural Heritage Land Trust to seek reimbursement of acquisition costs.
Property owner Shakeab Alshabkhoun said his family was pleased it will be made available for the public to enjoy.
Once the purchase is passed by the County Board, it goes to Falk for final approval.
