Black Earth (WKOW) -- Family members of 45-year-old Craig Severson invited us into their home. Friday, the family held a memorial service, to remember his life.
"Most people are going to remember Craig as a very giving person. He dropped whatever he was doing to help his friends and he had a lot of friends," says Craig's brother Ken Severson.
Severson was more than a friend he was a father.
He is survived by his two sons, 20-year-old Travis Severson and his 1-year-old son Alex. Family members call him Spike.
"He's a man's man. He likes being around the guys," Travis Severson says.
On the shootings police found the infant unharmed.
He was in the apartment when his father Craig was shot to death and mother Lisa Morgan, seriously wounded.
"It was his first birthday when they were shot," says Ken Severson.
20- year-old Travis was close to his father. He says the hardest part of this tragic experience, is that his baby brother won't have the same chance.
"That's the thing i was most upset about, I knew my dad, he was a great guy, but he doesn't get to know him now," Travis Severson says.
Family members have set up a trust fund at Black Earth State Bank in Black Earth for one-year-old Alex and his mother who is still in the hospital.
"We hope it will give him a chance. That it will give him a chance to get things in life his father would have gave him," Ken Severson says.
Little Alex will be staying with family until his mother is released from the hospital.
Travis Severson says he wants to be more than a big brother, something his father would have wanted.
"I will provide everything i can, anyway i can any money i can get to," Severson says.
