Madison (WKOW) -- The holidays are here, but not everyone has family nearby to spend them with - or the ability to create their own Thanksgiving feast.
Everyday, hundreds of dane county residents get a knock on their doors.
"We deliver a hot, nutritious meal to home bound, frail, older, disabled adults throught dane county every evening", Patricia Elden of Independent Living told 27 News.
Organizers say both Independent Living's and Home Health United's Meals on Wheels program are especially important during the holidays...
"We don't want to see any older adults or disabled home by themselves during the holidays without their turkey dinner."
A warm meal that wouldn't be possible without volunteer drivers.
Michael Baer's delivered meals weekly for fifteen years. He says his route is convenient and takes about an hour. "When I started doing this, I thought okay it's a nice thing to do, but after a while I learned it's much more than that."
But, it's more than just a warm meal - volunteers also do safety checks on clients and often offer much needed social interaction.
Jane Snowden of Home Health United told 27 News, "It makes sure people are safe in their homes...it's a friendly visitor for some who don't see someone the rest of the day."
Both Home Health United and Independent Living needs volunteers to deliver meals during the holidays and year-round.
