Madison (WKOW) -- from UW Health: University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics has been awarded the top performance award for achieving the American Stroke Association's guidelines for longer than two years.
Because minutes lost are brain cells lost, the UW stroke center has a goal of identifying a potential stroke patient within 10 minutes of arrival, getting the patient to a diagnostic scan within a half hour, and into treatment within an hour UW Hospital was the only Madison-area hospital to win the award and one of five in Wisconsin.
To win the Get With The GuidelinesSM-Stroke(GWTG-Stroke) Gold Performance Achievement Award, UW Hospital demonstrated 85 percent adherence to key measures for 24 or more consecutive months.
These include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol-reducing drugs, and smoking cessation.
"We're pleased that the American Stroke Association has recognized our expertise in giving our stroke patients the very best care," said UW Health stroke neurologist Dr. Justin Sattin.
