BURLINGTON, Wis. (AP) -- A Burlington man accused of preying on a mentally disabled woman has been charged with hate crimes.
Prosecutors added hate crime enhancers to theft charges against 34-year-old James Gustafson because he allegedly targeted her because of her disability.
Authorities say Gustafson called the woman, pretending to be a psychic who would put her in touch with her deceased father.
The 'psychic' said he needed money in order for the woman to talk to her dead father.
The woman later called police to report someone had taken $7,000 and jewelry from her over the summer.
