Atlanta (WKOW) -- from UW Athletics: Former Wisconsin All-American and current student assistant coach Jackie Vavrek earned a runner-up finish at the USA Swimming Short Course National Championships in Atlanta, claiming second place in the women's 50-yard freestyle on Thursday.
Vavrek clocked in at 22.27 seconds to earn the second spot, finishing behind winner Amanda Weir's 21.82.
Vavrek's performance came about 10 minutes after her UW school record in the 50 free was broken by freshman Beckie Thompson some 800 miles to the west.
Thompson toppled Vavrek's record of 22.30 - and the Big Ten Conference record, as well - by clocking a 22.25 on her leadoff leg of the Badgers' entry in the 200 free relay at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas.
Also in Austin, Arizona's Lara Jackson set the American record in the 50 free during Thursday's prelims only to improve her own mark during the evening session by clocking a 21.37 in the finals.
Vavrek was a nine-time All-American during her four years with the Badgers, winning back-to-back Big Ten titles in the 50 free in 2007 and 2008.
She also was part of three UW relays that claimed conference championships and was a 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier.
