MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A new hot line for Wisconsin road information is ready to go just in time for another winter storm.
The 511 Traveler Information System replaces the state Transportation Department's 1-800 ROAD WIS line.
Wisconsin transportation officials say the 511 system offers 267 lines, five times as many as the old system. Expansion plans call for 1,000 lines, which the department says will eliminate busy signals.
The 511 system uses voice recognition software to prompt callers through a list of options providing information on traffic incidents and road conditions. It also offers information on buses, trains, ferries, and taxis.
A storm that could dump as much as a foot of snow is expected to hit southern Wisconsin on Thursday night.
