Converter box coupon program gets additional funding
NEW YORK (WKOW) -- The agency that mails out the coupons for the digital TV converter boxes has received fresh funding from the economic stimulus plan and plans to eliminate the coupon wait list in two and a half weeks.
The fund that pays for the $40 coupons ran out of money in early January. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration was still able to mail out some coupons, but only after old coupons expired. Since then, a wait list of 2.3 million households has formed.
The NTIA also expects to change its rules so that people who received coupons before but let them expire can now apply for new ones.
