MADISON (WKOW) — Madison city officials and the Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired stressed pedestrian safety on Wednesday.
Wisconsin’s White Cane Law states that a person operating a vehicle must stop at least ten feet from someone who is using a white cane or guide dog. The city of Madison has proclaimed Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day, and recognizes the importance of pedestrian safety year-round.
“Pedestrian travel is not a luxury,” said Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. “Taking Steps to ensure pedestrian routes are accessible is of great importance to staff at the city.”
Rhodes-Conway added Madison has the most pedestrian signals per capita. She also said she’s working with Madison Metro to improve accessibility to bus stops over the next five years.
