Garage door opener left in unlocked car leads to Middleton home burglary

MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- Middleton residents reported that an unidentified thief or thieves stole one of their cars, along with a purse and several credit cards, from their home early Thursday morning.

According to a news release from the Dane County Sheriff's Office, the theft happened sometime before 3:17 a.m. Thursday. 

The homeowners told responding deputies that the thieves used a garage door opener in an unlocked car to gain access to their home. Once inside the house, they took the keys to a different vehicle and a homeowner's purse.

"The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind citizens that this activity has become all too common and securing vehicles and all doors is essential. Removing valuables and garage door openers from vehicles at is also recommend," sheriff's office spokesperson Elise Schaffer said in a release.
