Road rage leads to handgun-related arrest

  • Updated

MADISON (WKOW) -- Road rage devolved into a weapons violation on Madison's southeast side Monday afternoon.

Police arrested Joseph B. Mandt, 36, Belleville for disorderly conduct while armed, according to a police incident report.

A 37-year-old Madison man called police just after 4 p.m. to say another driver pointed a gun at him on South Stoughton Road at Pflaum Road.

The man said he was driving down a stretch of street that narrowed from three lanes down to two. A driver of a pickup truck tried to pass him on the left before the left lane ended.

There wasn't enough space and the two vehicles scraped wheel wells. The two men pulled over.

From here, police said, the two men's stories differ.

The Madison man told an officer he tried to go talk to the other driver but the pickup driver pulled out a gun.

The pickup driver, stopped by police a short time later, said he only showed the gun after the Madison man confronted him with a knife.

Officers did not find a knife on the Madison man, but did allegedly find two handguns in Mandt's truck.
