MMSD Board of Education votes to rename James Madison Memorial High school after Vel Phillips

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Metropolitan School Board voted unanimously in favor of a recommendation to rename James Madison Memorial High School after Vel Phillips.

The new name will be Vel Phillips Memorial High School. The name change will go in effect at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year.

The school board voted in favor of the recommendation brought forward last month by the Citizens' Ad Hoc Committee. 

Phillips was the first Black woman elected to statewide office.

She served as Secretary of State from 1979 to 1983.
