Center for Covid Control Pauses Operations Amid Numerous Complaints

COVID-19 testing site concerns

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- The Center for Covid Control operates more than 300 locations, including 27 in Wisconsin.

The business just announced Thursday it's pausing operations for additional staff training and education.

27 News is hearing from people who regret their decision to get tested at these sites.

"I should have listened to my instincts to walk away, but I was desperate," said Angela Schuldies. She described her reservations about taking her first-ever COVID-19 test at a Center for Covid Control testing location.

"Two staff people both wearing one face mask, no face shield, no gloves, no nothing. They asked us to fill out these little cards and share pens," said Schuldies.

Schuldies said at the site in Sun Prairie, health and safety practices were questionable.

"About 15 of us in a 10 x 12 room facing each other. The staff member said okay, now you're going to pull your mask down and you're going to do your own swab, definitely not six feet apart," said Schuldies.

Schuldies also said she didn't get the test she signed up for.

"The websites that I could get a PCR but once you got in there, it's only a rapid," said Schuldies.

Some customers say they're satisfied with the service at the Center for Covid Control.

A resident who visited the Middleton location said, "Once you go into the site. The staff is very diligent about stand here six feet apart from everybody as you move through the process. Everybody's standing in a line. Staff has wipes everywhere. New fresh pens everywhere. The protocol is fantastic in there."

"There's usually only one person, maybe two running these things," said Adam Wilkinson.

Wilkinson said he visited that same Middleton location and a Madison location, both were understaffed, so now he questions the integrity of his results. There's just one person and.. then they leave the samples and bags just on the tables. If you're sick, you need a negative result, you want to be confident in your safety among your friends, family, coworkers, these testing sites are making me a little nervous."

The Better Business Bureau confirms they have also gotten dozens of customers writing negative reviews or complaints.

"If you look at the Center for Covid Testing's business profile, there are 22 complaints. You could see that the company does have an F rating," said Tiffany Schultz, Southwest Wisconsin Regional Director for BBB.

Center for Covid Control is now pausing operations at all of its testing locations for at least a week - starting Friday. They said in a statement to 27 News, "We’ve made this difficult decision to temporarily pause all operations, until we are confident that all collection sites are meeting our high standards for quality."

The Center for Covid Control also said "certain locations are experiencing high demand for testing due to the Omicron variant surge. This unusually high patient demand has stressed staffing resources, as has been widely reported, in a subset of our locations, affecting our usual customer service standards and diagnostic goals."

27 News also contacted Public Health Madison and Dane County and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services about the Center for Covid Control and neither could comment specifically about the company, but both said they've a list of verified, reputable testing locations on their website.

Right now, the "Center for Covid Control" is not on either website.
